Disneyland Tour 2019 – Laura Watters, Chorister

The tour was a dream come true to go to California and get to experience the magic of Disneyland. It meant a time to really discover myself and where I fit in the choir. It was fun to become closer with the rest of the choristers.

I learned so much on the trip: stuff that I don’t think I’ll ever forget and that I’ll use over and over again in my musical career and in life. We learned how music really sets the tone; how sometimes lovely sound is not what you want; and learned different styles and techniques for singing.

It was really cool to learn about recording and the steps involved. I was amazed at how easy it was. The pace was faster, but still enjoyable. For a stage piece you learn section by section and repeat and repeat. In Disneyland you have maybe two practices and record phrase by phrase. If you make a mistake you re-record and they patch over the error. Of course this would not work for a live performance: very different methods for different purposes.

It was amazing to see how focused the schedule of performance in the park was. The expectations are high, but they are always high for us, so it was less stressful than if we had not been used to such high standards. Performing there was different because the audience sat so close. It also required more acting out the song than we are used to.

When we attended the symphony It was cool to see how they mixed the traditional forms of classical symphony with African American blues and jazz and gospel. The acoustics were amazing in the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The fact that I could see the entire orchestra from above and hear the entire orchestra was phenomenal. I loved the emotion that they put into the music.

I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to be a part of this tour. I felt like I really found my individual voice through learning more about different musical styles and genres. I think the think that is the coolest is that I can take everything I learned and use it as I go forward in performing arts.
